· Joe Riggs Breaks Both Hands In Fight Against Baroni
Shortly after his unanimous decision victory over Phil Baroni, during his in-cage interview, Joe Riggs told television announcer Gus Johnson that he broke both of his hands during the fight. Riggs dominated Baroni from the opening bell and earned the unanimous decision with a clinic of strikes.
Joe Riggs was originally scheduled to fight Jake Shields at "Strikeforce: Shamrock vs Diaz" in April, but the fight was pulled even though Riggs had signed the bout agreement. Both fighters were then rescheduled to face different opponents at "Strikeforce: Lawler vs Shields". Riggs went on to fight Baroni, while Shields fought in the main event against top 5 ranked middleweight Robbie Lawler. Despite victories by both men, it didn't stop Riggs from stating he wanted to fight Shields. "I want Jake Shields. I don't want to be disrespectful to him any more; he's a tough fighter. So yeah, I'd like to fight Jake Shields".
At the post fight press conference when Shield's was asked about a fight with Riggs, Shields said "Riggs isn't a concern to me, he isn't really worth my time. I won't give him the time of day".
The war of words, has been mainly one sided, as Riggs has been quoted many times discussing the abandoned fight, while Shields maintains that he has moved on and is looking to fight opponents with bigger reputations and higher rankings than Riggs. These words have only infuriated the talented Riggs further. With Shields now an obvious main event caliber fighter, it conceivable that Riggs may never get an opportunity to settle the score and have his desired fight with one of the best welterweight fighters in the world.
