· UFC 116: Round-By-Round & Post Fight Coverage

Tonight's "UFC 116: Lesnar vs Carwin" event will be broadcast on pay-per-view from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The event features the long awaited return of Lesnar as he intends to unify the UFC heavyweight titles against Shane Carwin. Also featured will be a middleweight showdown with Yoshihiro Akiyama and Chris Leben. Catch all the live blow-by-blow action as we bring you live coverage of the main broadcast card round-by-round.

The prelims are over and the main card is coming up. If the Main Event card is anything like the fights earlier this evening, we will be in for a treat.

 

* Because the UFC will occassionally broadcast undercard bouts during the pay-per-view, the prelims will not be updated until the event has completed.


Jon Madsen vs. Karlos Vemola  (Unaired Prelim)

Official Decision - Jon Madsen wins by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

 

Forrest Petz vs. Daniel Roberts  (Unaired Prelim)

Official Decision -Daniel Roberts win by split decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29)


Gerald Harris vs. Dave Branch  (Unaired Prelim)

Round 1 - Harris lands the first blow with a looping left. Branch attempts a head kick. Harris looking calm, searching for an opening. Branch lands a knee as Harris comes in for a body lock. Harris pushes forward with punches, backing up Branch. Harris throwing strikes from a distance. A quick exchange, Harris throwing for the fences. Branch lands a reaching uppercut. Harris charges in and gets the fight into the clinch up against the cage. The fight stalls as Harris tries to secure the takedown. Harris gets Branch up and down, but right into the guard.  The round closes. Close round likely 10-9 to Harris.

Round 2 - Branch coming in early. Harris stuffs the takedown. Harris still very calm, Branch dancing side to side. Branch attempts a head kick. Harris gets the takedown, with Branch in the fence. Harris from Branch's guard trying to work the ground strikes, lands a few strong punches. Branch, meanwhile, looks to better the position. Branch gets to his feet and eats a knee for his trouble. Branch reverses the clinch against the cage, landing knees to hte thigh of Harris. Harris dips low for another takedown. Branch working hard to attack from guard, and gets to his feet. With thirty seconds left, Branch is the one keeping the distance now. Harris lands a right. The bell sounds with Harris easily picking up this round.

Round 3 - Branch rushing in with urgency. Harris avoids the takedown. Then ends up on top. Branch quickly works for a triangle, but Harris slams him out of the position. Branch gets free and eats a left as he stands. Branch pins Harris into the fence. Dean separates the fighters. On the restart Branch lands a good knee. Harris pushes Branch into the fence. Branch jumps guard, and Harris elevates and slams Branch to the mat. He is out cold, and Harris recognizes it and stops the assault. Gerald Harris wins by knockout slam.

Kendall Grove vs. Goran Reljic  (Unaired Prelim)

Round 1 - Both men coming out working jabs and kicks, trying to establish the proper distance.  Neither man landing anything significant in the first two minutes. Reljic lands a good jab to the body. Grove lands a solid right. Grove witha good front kick. Relic picks up the pace a bit and attacks. Reljic gets the takedown.  Grove lands a great upkick, dropping him, and both get back to their feet. Grove lands a good knee before tying up against the cage. Reljic with a knee to the beltline, Grove answers with one of his own. The round closes. Reljic 10-9, but awfully close.

Round 2 - Reljic lands a good punch, and Grove imediately shoots for a takedwon. Reljic throws up the legs and traps the arm to get an omoplata sweep. Reljic to his feet, taking several upkicks in order to get back in tight to Grove. Grove working elbows from guard. Reljic trying to find a way to attack through Grove's guard. Grove working very well from the bottom. Mario Yamasaki stands the two up with under a minute to go. Grove working the long front kicks as the round closes out. Grove's work from the bottom earns him round 2, 10-9.

Round 3 - Grove with pressure, comes forward with the jab. Relic misses another head kick, but lands to the body. Grove with a leg kick, and a right to the sternum. Reljic working for the takedown, he gets it, but Grove secures a guilotine and Relic quickly tries to get back out. Grove lands a knee on the exit. Reljic lands a good leg kick. Reljic forces Grove into the cage , Grove working elbows. Reljic gets another takedown and lands in half-guard. Neather fighter working strikes. Reljic gains side control but isn't working. Reljic to a north-south position, still no advancement. Grove gets up as the bell sounds. Another close round, 10-9 for Relic on control throughout the round.

Seth Petruzelli vs. Ricardo Romero  (Spike TV Broadcast)

Round 1 - Petruzelli, in his trademark pink hair, comes out to the center of the cage. He starts out with some quality counter punching. He stuffs a takedown attempt from Romero. Petruzelli lands several big punches that forces Romero into the cage, covering up. They separate  and Petruzelli partially lands a head kick. Petruzelli looks for a takedown, but is unsuccessful. Petruzelli misses a spinning back kick, giving his back to Romero. Romero gets the fight to the ground and attempts a submission position, but Petruzelli spins out and ends up on top. Romero, with Petruzelli on top takes some stiff punches. After a brief scramble Romero ends up in full mount on Petruzelli, working for an arm lock. Petruzelli rolls, to avoid the submission, but Romero is tight and still working for an arm lock. Petruzelli gets to his feet, and drops Romero with a big uppercut. Petruzelli tries to finish him off with "double axe-handle" hammer fists, but could not finish. Set Petruzelli takes round 1 10-9.

Round 2 - Petruzelli opens the round with a solid knee, backing him away from the action. Petruzelli stalks in and lands a few more solid punches. Romero attempts a takedown, Petruzelli avoids and takes back position. Petruzelli attempts an armbar, but Romero stays alive and ends up on top in the guard. Romero is bleeding badly from an earlier strike. Petruzelli works some short elbows from the bottom. As the two tire out, Petruzelli attempts a triangle, but it slips off. Romero  ends up in a mounted crucifix and stretches out Petruzelli's arm in a straight armbar. Petruzelli submits imediately. Ricardo Romero wins by submission.

Brendan Schaub vs. Chris Tuchscherer  (Spike TV Broadcast)

Round 1 - Tuchscherer and Schaub being very cautious in opening moment. Schaub answers a Tuchscherer leg kick with several hooks. Scahub slips a jab and lands a huge overhand right that sends Tuchscherer to the canvas. Schaub pounces and continues landing shots until Herb Dean stops the bout. Brendan Schaub wins by TKO

Official Decision - Brendan Schaub wins by TKO (strikes) at 1:07 of Round 1.

 

Kurt Pellegrino vs. George Sotiropoulos

Round 1 - Sotiropoulos comes out aggressive. Pellegrino countering well. The two exchange for a moment. Sotiropoulos lands a good punch and drops Pellegrino. The two scramble on the ground, and make it back to the feet before anyone can secure a position. Pellegrino recovers and lands a good right. Sotiropoulos seems to be beating Pellegrino to the punch. Pellegrino gets the takedwon, but again the fight gets back to the feet quickly. Sotiropoulos using great headmovement to avoid any solid strikes as he attacks. Pellegrino gets a takedown. Sotiropoulos from his back secures a tight guard. Pellegrino powers out and moves to half-guard, then full guard. The round closes well for Pellegrino, but Sotiropoulos takes it 10-9.

Round 2 - Pellegrino misses with a Superman punch and Sotiropoulos grabs a leg and gets the takedown. Sotiropoulos quickly to half-guard. Pellegrino works back to full guard. Both fighters hand fighting and searching for position. Sotiropoulos gets back to half-guard. Sotiropoulos traps the head and lands hard punches and elbows. A great scramble, but Sotiropoulos comes out of it with top position again, and moves to side control, then to the back of Pellegrino. Pellegrino stands, but is trapped in a body lock against the cage. Sotiropoulos patiently waiting for Pellegrino to give him an opening. Pellegrino lands a knee as they break. Pellegrino again charges in with a knee, and Sotiropoulos answers with a left hook. George Sotiropoulos takes the round 10-9.

Round 3 - Sotiropoulos still appears to be the leader in the striking, still beating Pellegrino to the punch. Sotiropoulos landing jab after jab as Pellegrino is looking for an opening to land a big shot.  Sotiropoulos lands a big right, and Pellegrino retreats, but then shoots and takes down the Aussie. Pellegrino on top, in the guard, can't get free enough to do any damage. Sotiropoulos works to a high guard, trapping Pellegrino. Peelegrino finally breaking free, and the two get back to their feet. Sotiropoulos pushes the fight to the cage, working the clinch. As the fight comes off the fence, Pellegrino lands a big knee dropping Sotiropoulos, but the buzzer sounds ending the fight, before Pellegrino can end the fight. Kurt Pellegrino takes the final round with that finish, 10-9.

Official Decision -George Sotiropoulos wins by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

 

Stephan Bonnar vs. Krysztof Soszynski

Round 1 - Soszynski wastes no time attacking, landing two big lefts. Bonnar chasing Soszynski around the cage, catches a leg kick and gets the takedown. Bonnar stacks him up, and Soszynski tries to secure the position. Soszynski gets to his feet and punishes Bonnar against the cage. Bonnar ties up. Bonnar switches position and lands several good elbows on Soszynski. The two trade leg kicks. Bonnar tries a back kick and Soszynski gets his back momentarily. The fighters work back against the cage. Bonnar lands a few elbows before Soszynski escapes. While retreating Soszynski takes a big body kick from Bonnar. Soszynski comes back with big jabs and Bonnar retreats. Soszynski lands several big punches, but Bonnar answers and survives. Close entertaining round, but Soszynski likely takes it, 10-9.

Round 2 - Bonnar opens up with jabs, but Soszynski answers with the power punches, backing up Bonnar.  Against the cage, Bonnar lands a good knee to the body and the two trade several solid shots. Soszynski catches Bonnar on the exit, buckling the knees, but Bonnar recovers quickly. The fight is back and forth, with Bonnar coming right back to land a good flurry. Bonnar gets a takedwon and is in full side control. Soszynski spins back up, but Bonna r still has him against the cage. He lands a big knee dropping Soszynski. Soszynski covers up and Bonnar is reigning down punches. The referee finally steps in and stops the bout. Stephan Bonnar wins by TKO.

Chris Lytle vs. Matt Brown

Round 1 - Lytle throwing for the fence with the first punches. He lands a good body shot. The two clinch and Lytle works some good short punches. They separate and Brown answers back. The two clinch again. Brown get a trip, but Lytle quickly back up. The action slows as both men fight for position. Brown breaks and lands a solid shot before going back into the clinch. Brown secures the takedown, and Lytle scrambles. Brown working for an D'Arce choke, and has it locked in. Lytle is surviving and finally he gets free and back to the feet. Lytle lands a punch, Brown answers with a kick.  Lytle misses with a home run uppercut. Brown working front kicks and headkicks to keep Lytle at a distance. Brown drops Lytle with a straight left, but wasn't hurt too badly. The round closes. Brown takes the round with the takedowns, and submission attempts, 10-9.

Round 2 - The twoo come out trading again, a little sloppy to start, with both throwing big shots.  Brown lands a good left, and Lytle answers with an uppercut. Lytle gets Brown to the ground and grabs a choke. Lytle spins around and secures a mounted triangle, trapping both of Brown's arms. Lytle stretches the arm out and the referee stops the  bout as Brown verbally submits.

Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Chris Leben

Round 1 - Akiyama catches an early kick and trips Leben. Leben working kicks, and lands a running right to Akiyama. Akiyama stalking, Leben continues to kick at the legs. Akiyama goes low and catches Leben low. The action pauses. Leben back in. Akiyama lands a good right, misses a spinning back fist. Akiyama gets a takedown, but Leben tries to secure an armbar. Akiyama avoids easily and goes back to the close assault. Leben again secures an armbar position, but again Akiyama pulls out. Akiyama spins and he tries to secure an armbar. Akiyama still in a good position, but Leben has avoided the submission. Akiyama, now in half-guard, working to pass to side control. Leben works back to the feet, and Akiyama forces it into the cage. The two separate and Leben lands a good strike. Akiyama closes the round with a beautiful Judo trip. Akiyama takes round 1 10-9.

Round 2 - Leben still working the kicks, he slips and misses with a head kick. Akiyama lands a spinning back fist. Leben answers with a good shot. Akiyama lands a good left and Akiyama answers right back. The two going toe-to-toe and both men are hurt and swinging for survival. Great exchange and both men tire and clinch. Akiyama gets a sweep takedown and ends up on top. Leben works back to the cage, trying to walk up the cage. Akiyama slides him back down. Leben finally gets back up and both men are starting to show signs of wear. Leben, back against the cage. slips on a front choke, into a guilotine. Akiyama pushes out.  Leben lands the left, and a headkick. Leben lands a few more punches. Akiyama is hurt, but both men are exhausted. Very close round. Score it 10-10 as both men did maximum damage in the round.

Round 3 - Leben opens with a body kick. Akiyama's hands are very very low. Leben applying the pressure. Akiyama catches a kick and drops Leben, landing a punch along the way. Akiyama attempting a neck crank. Leben working short punches. Leben locks up an armbar position, but Akiyama stands up and slides out. Akiyama still on top, in half-guard. Akiyama contoling Leben's position. Leben landing small punches from the bottom as Akiyama does little striking. Leben striking away from the bottom, as Akiyama does little to answer. Now Akiyama postures up and throws several punches. Chris Leben goes for a triangle and cinches it in. Akiyama taps out.

Main Event:  Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin
UFC Heavyweight Unification Bout

Round 1 - Lesnar gets the takedwon early, but Carwin is right back up. Carwin lands a knee. Carwin lands an uppercut and Lesnar is hurt bad. Carwin lands another uppercut and drops Lesnar. Carwin is pumeling Lesnar. Lesnar covers up and Carwin is throwing everyhting he has at him. Lesnar bleeding, trying to stop the assault. Carwin slows the attack, but is till in control and postures up, dropping big elbows. Lesnar covers, Carwin backs away, only to come back in. Carwin from half-guard, looking for mount. Lesnar gets back to his feet after nearly four minutes on his back. Lesnar pushing Carwin into the fence, lands a knee to the mid section. Brock knees the leg and looks for the takedwon. The bell sounds. Must be a 10-8 round for Carwin.

Round 2 - The two touch gloves to open the round. Lesnar narrowly misses a big right, and then takes Carwin down to the ground. Lesnar in half-guard. Lesnar working slowly, methodically working close strikes, and moves to mount, and imediately to an arm triangle. Lesnar squeezes and Carwin submits. Brock Lesnar is the undisputed UFC Heavyweight Champion.

Official Decision - Brock Lesnar wins by submission (arm triangle choke) at 2:19 of Round 2
