· UFC 110 Breakdown And Results
The UFC's pilgrimage into the land down under is in the books and the card was action packed from the opening to the closing bell. Additionally, four "Fight of the Night" bonuses valued at $50,000 a piece were handed out following the event.
Kicking the night off was a heavyweight clash between Anthony Perosh and Mirko "Cro Cop" Flipovic. Perosh was backpedaling and attempting failed takedown after failed takedown as CroCop's sprawl was on display more than his legendary striking. Late in the second round, Cro Cop landed a vicious elbow that opened cut over Perosh's eye that ended the fight after the second round concluded.
In the second bout of the night we were treated to a light heavyweight clash between former "The Ultimate Fighter" reality stars Keith Jardine and Ryan Bader. The opening round could have easily been scored for Bader as he controlled the pace for the majority of the round and kept Jardine on his back. The second round was too close to score yet the third round saw Bader rock Jardine and then finish him off with a single punch. Ryan Bader defeated Keith Jardine by knockout in the third round.
The third bout of the night was a preliminary contest between Brian Foster and Chris Lytle. What was quickly a slugfest ended in the blink of an eye with Lytle executing a textbook knee bar that left Foster lying on the mat in pain. Lytle picked up the submission victory early in the first round and earned the "Submission of the Night" award.
A lightweight bout between another pair of Ultimate Fighter contestants brought us plenty of action as George Sotriopolos took on Joe Stevenson. The first round was a grappling clinic as Sotiropolos moved from position to position, winning the first round easily. The second round was much closer as Stevenson secured a takedown after two minutes of impressive striking from Sotiropolos. Stevenson maintained top control for a minute until Sotriopolos reverses the position, but Stevenson ended up back on top. The round ended with a failed choke attempt by Sotiropolis. The third round was back and forth on the ground and on the feet. Sotriopolos got the better of the striking and constantly changed position on the ground. Stevenson got a takedown with about 30 seconds left and the round ended leaving the fight in the hands of the judges. The judges scored the bout 30-27 with George Sotiropolis picking up a unanimous decision. Both fighters received "Fight of the Night" bonuses for their exciting performances throughout the duration of the fight.
Wanderlei Silva made his long anticipated return and his middleweight debut against "The Ultimate Fighter" winner Michael Bisping in the night's fifth televised bout. The first round of the bout was pretty evenly matched with neither of the fighters having a distinct advantage. With less than ten seconds left in the round, Silva unleashed a flurry of punches that had Bisping on his heels as the round ended. The second round was extremely close with both fighters having secured successful takedowns. With 15 seconds left in the second, Bisping executed a takedown that allowed Silva to grab hold of a tight guillotine choke. The round ended and the fight went to the third round. The final round proved uneventful until the final minute. Silva caught a kick and landed a trip kick, then with just a few seconds left Silva dropped Bisping with a flurry of punches as time expired. The judges score the bout 29-28 for Wanderlei Silva unanimously.
The evening's main event didn't last long as Cain Velasquez secured a quick knockout victory over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Early on in the fight, Velasquez mixed up his kicks and strikes, catching Nogueira flush and knocking him out a mere two minutes into the first round. For his performance, Velasquez earned the "Knockout of the Night" honor.
After the main event ended, the UFC gave bonus coverage to the preliminary bout between Krystoff Soszynski and Stephan Bonnar. Soszynski opened the fight with a barrage of punches before catching a poke in the eye. After a brief pause the action picked back up. Bonnar secured a combination of takedowns but mounted little offense. With the fight on the feet, Soszynski had a clear striking advantage that left Bonnar's face a bloody mess at the end of the first round. After a closely contested second and third round, the fight was stopped due to a cut by an unintentional headbutt. Krystoff Soszynski won the bout via technical knockout due to the cut in the third round.
