· UFC 109: Round-By-Round & Post Fight Coverage

  As with past UFC events, MMA Spot will be bringing our readers round by round coverage and post-fight press conferences for tonight's pay- per-view broadcast of "UFC 109: Relentless". The event will be taking place from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, and features a light heavyweight bout between Hall of Famers Mark Coleman and Randy Couture. Also on the card, middleweight title hopefuls Chael Sonnen and Nate Marquardt. Catch all the live blow-by-blow action as we bring you live coverage of the main broadcast card round by round.

The prelims are over and the main card is coming up. If the Main Event card is anything like the fights earlier this evening, we will be in for a treat.

Rolles Gracie vs. Joey Beltran  (Unaired Prelim)

Round 1 - A nice ovation for Gracie. Beltran comes out looking strong and Gracie works for a takedown. He gets the takedown and imediately mounts and takes Beltran's back. Beltran slides, and Gracie rolls to mount. Beltran reverses and ends up in Gracie's guard. Beltran lands a sharp punch. Gracie's stand up looks lacking, but he displays some power with a heavy jab. Beltran swings a haymaker that lands on Gracie's ear. Gracie dives for a leg and Beltran shakes it off. Both men stand toe-to-toe and swing wildly. Gracie striking with his shoulders square and no head movement. Gracie lunges for a takedown  and Beltran pounds away from the sprawl. Joey Beltran takes round 1 10-9

Round 2 - Beltran stuffs a takedown and again pounds away from the sprawl.  Gracie looks completely gassed. He dives for an ankle pick and Beltran walks away from it. Another ankle pick and Beltran sprawls. Gracie lays on the canvas as Beltran pounds away. After near two dozen punches, the referee steps in and calls the bout. Joey Beltran wins.

Tim Hague vs. Chris Tuchscherer  (Unaired Prelim)

Phil Davis vs. Brian Stann  (Unaired Prelim)

Round 1 - Both coming out looking for hard strikes. Davis gets Stann into the cage early and works some short strikes. Davis lands a knee to the body, but Stann breaks away. Davis sidesteps a big punch. Stann coming in looking to hit hard, Davis takes a few punches, but is avoiding standing right in front of his opponent. Davis lands a jab, eats a leg kick. Davis follows a left with a takedown and lands in side control. Stann rolls and Davis switches to Stann's back. Stann tries to stand and Davis drops him and flattens him out. Davis lands a few punches and Stann rolls but is still in full mount. Back to back mount and Davis is pounding away. Stann rolled back to his back, but couldn't shake Davis as the round ends. Phil Davis in a convincing round 10-9.

Round 2 - The two exchange power shots, and Davis lands several big kicks. Stann checks a few leg kicks, but Davis lands a left and imediately drops for a takedown. Stann works to half guard, and Davis quickly moves to mount. Davis looks to ground and pound, but Stann shakes him and gets back to half guard. Davis in side control, works for a submission and takes mount again. Stann tries to roll, but Davis is smothering and in control. Davis lands a few punches and Stann continues to try and roll. But Davis stays in mount. Stann finally pushes off the and shakes the mount, but Davis takes the cradle position and lands huge knees to the body. As the round closes, Stann is left turtling. Great round for Davis 10-8.

Round 3 - Stann lands a left as Davis slips past. Davis scoops and gets another takedown. Davis in half guard is pressing Stann into the cage. Davis swings to the back and Stann gets it back to half guard. Davis back in mount and works for a keylock. Davis delivers several body shots, still comfortably in mount. Stann bucks, but Davis right back on top, taking his back. Stann rolls back to his back and Davis slides to side control. Then back to mount.  Davis smiles as he is in complete control over Brian Stann. Davis rolls for an armbar, but the bell sounds ending the fight. Round 3 to Davis, again 10-8.

Official Decision - Phil Davis wins by unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-27)

Phillipe Nover vs. Rob Emerson  (Unaired Prelim)

Melvin Guillard vs. Ronnys Torres  (Spike TV Prelim)

Mac Danzig vs. Justin Buckholz (Spike TV Prelim)


Frank Trigg vs. Matt Serra

Round 1 - Serra imediately opens the fight with a few body shots. Serra lands a few punches, but Trigg is countering very well off the aggressive Serra. Serra attempts a high kick, and continues to be the aggressor. Serra lunges in and rocks Trigg with a huge haymaker. Trigg crashes to the canvas and Serra lands three additional blows, forcing Josh Rosenthal to step in and save Frank Trigg. Matt Serra wins by KO.

Demian Maia vs. Dan Miller

Round 1 - Maia comes out looking cleaner with his head monement and footwork. Miller keeping lots of distance jumping in to strike. Maia looks for a double leg, but Miller is stuffing at the moment. Miller has an overhook then separates. Maia attempts a head kick and eats a counter left. Miller working a few leg kicks in. Maia follows a kick and gets a quick takedown. Miller jumps right back to his feet and takes a big knee to the groin, and time is stalled for a moment. Back to action Miller goes back to the distance game. Maia countering well though. Miller continues to lead with a body uppercut and a left, likely looking to set up something. Maia gets a trip, but Miller springs right back up as the round nears the end. Miller lands a sharp left and might have taken the round with it as the bell sounded. Dan Miller, in a close round 10-9

Round 2 - Maia attacks and lands a left and a body kick. Miller still working the body, backing Maia away. Neither man seems intent to stay in tight with one another, keeping punches to small combos. Maia lands a good overhand that causes Miller to wince. Miller with a sharp inside leg kick, then a outside. Miller's corner pleads for an extended combo. Miller lands four unanswered body punches. Ninety seconds to go and Miller is getting into a rythm, avoiding Maia's counters now. Maia presses in with a jab and a left. Miller takes another left looking for more body shots. The crowd boos loudly as the bell rings. Miller lands better and should take round 2 10-9.

Round 3 - Neither man can be certain to be ahead in this fight, as both rounds were close. Maia makes an early shot and Miller defends, landing an uppercut on the break. Miller lands a right as Maia shot in and wobbled him. Maia grabs a leg and completes the takedown. Miller scrambling for a decent position gets against the cage, but Maia stays on top. Miller gets back to the feet, but Maia goes right back at the legs. Miller gets a front lock, but Maia pushes through it and gets Millr to his back. Maia on top and Miller working a butterfly guard to defend. Maia lands several punches from the top, but cannot get through Miller's defense. Maia cannot advance, but Miller isn't scoring in the process. Under a minute and the crowd begins to boo again. Maia swings for position and Miller attempts a triangle, but escapes and Miller starts to work well from the bottom. The round goes to Maia 10-9.

Official Decision - Demain Maia wins by decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

 

Mike Swick vs. Paulo Thiago

Round 1 - Swick circling, Thiago poised to counter. Swick catches a headkick, but can't answer. Swick lands a jab and Thiago answers with a hook. Swick comes in and is countered. Swick pressing in, lands a left. Thiago with little head movement. Swick misses a low kick and Thiago answers with one of his own. Swick lands a left but Thiago continues to stand his ground. Swick doubles up his punches. Thiago moves forward and drops a big left on Swick forcing him to back away. Swick does for a takedown and gets it. Thiago ties up, with under twenty seconds to go. The takedown likely locked the round for Swick, 10-9.

Round 2 - Swick continues to look for speed. He pops in and out with the jab, but Thiago is answering with kicks to the legs and body. Swick paws and Thiago eats a big punch, but Thiago lands a counter and drops Swick. Paulo Thiago pounces right on him and locks up the D'Arce choke and puts Mike Swick to sleep. Paulo Thiago wins by technical submission.

Nate Marquardt vs. Chael Sonnen

Round 1 - Both men go to striking quickly. Sonnen presses Marquardt into the cage and gets the takedown. Marquardt hooks a guillotine, but Sonnen pulls out and begins working the ground and pound. Sonnen lands several big elbows. Marquardt tries to tie up. Sonnen continues press away. Marquardt pushes off, stands, and delivers a big knee to Sonnen. But Sonnen walks through it and takes Marquardt right back down. Away from the cage Sonnen continues to pound away on Marquardt. Elbows, punches, elbows. Marquardt tries to control Sonnen's posture, but to no avail. Under twenty seconds and Marquardt has no answer. The bell sounds and Sonnen takes round 1 easily, 10-9.

Round 2 - Sonnen right back with the takedown to open the round. Sonnen continues to ground and pound, but Marquardt tries for a kimura. Sonnen in half guard. Sonnen in complete control. Marquardt twists and turns, but cannot shake Sonnen. Sonnen is bleeding badly after an elbow from the bottom. Sonnen tries to quicken the pace, and takes Marquardt's back. Marquardt is covered in Sonnen's blood, but is still being controled. Sonnen stays on top delivering elbows to the body. Marquardt takes advantage of an opening to get up, but Sonnen swarms right back on him and gets right back in control. The round ends and a bloody Sonnen takes another round, 10-8.

Round 3 - Marquardt comes out and tries a takedown. Sonnen defends and takes Marquardt down. Right back into top control in Marquardt's guard. Marquardt cannot find any space to work. Marquardt tries to push away and Sonnen right to his back and pulls him right back down. Sonnen continues to work the ground strikes, leaving Marquardt with very little opportunities. Marquardt's corner screaming and pleading him to get going. Marquardt gets up, lands a knee and pulls a guillotine on Sonnen. Sonnen's face is purple and he's about out, but Sonnen somehow survives and slips out. Marquardt takes Sonnen over the top and he ends up on top. Marquardt now on top in a north-south postion. Marquardt stands and lands a few big punches as the round closes. Marquardt may have stolen round 3, 10-9.

Official Decision - Chael Sonnen wins by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)


Main Event:  Randy Couture vs. Mark Coleman

Round 1 - The round starts and Couture lands first with a jab. Coleman's hands are a little low and Couture connects with several jabs. Couture lands, but Coleman answers with a hook and Couture backs away. Coleman slipping punches and takes several big punches and a knee from Couture. Coleman presed into the cage and Couture goes to work with the short strikes. Couture lands an uppercut snapping Coleman's head back. Couture working the clinch against the cage and Coleman eats two big uppercuts. Couture with underhooks, preventing Coleman from dropping levels. The round ends with Coleman stuck in the cage. Couture wins the round 10-9.

Round 2 - Both men land crisp jabs. Couture comes in and lands a left and takes Coleman down. Couture in mount and is pumeling Coleman. Couture takes his back and sinks in a rear naked choke and Coleman is choked out. Randy Couture gets the submission victory.

Official Decision - Randy Couture wins via submission at 1:09 of Round 2
