Guy Mezger ~ Retirement, Coaching, And Nutrition
A veteran of both the UFC and Japan's Pride Fighting Championships, Guy Mezger has been present from the very beginning of the sport. Throughout his 17-year career, which included a UFC championship, Mezger continually set the bar high not only for his competitors, but for the overall growth of mixed martial arts. Even now, after his competitive career has ended, Mezger is still impacting the sport’s present and future. MMA Spot's Breanna Armstrong had the recent pleasure of meeting up with Mezger to discuss his "retirement," his thoughts on the evolution of MMA, and the important role supplements and nutrition play in the careers of today's fighters.
“UFC 115: Liddell vs. Franklin” aired live from Vancouver, B.C., Canada Saturday night with an entertaining fight card of back-and-forth battles and last-minute finishes. The promotion’s fourth visit north of the border might also prove to be the final appearance of an Octagon legend. Pat Curran completed his unlikely Cinderella-story run through Bellator Fighting Championships’ season two lightweight tournament on Thursday, scoring a split decision victory over MMA veteran and 2009 "Submission of the Year" titleholder Toby Imada to win the tournament championship. Curran’s win headlined another great night of fights from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in South Florida, roughly 30 miles south of the high school that Curran represented in the state wrestling finals just four years ago.
Undefeated heavyweight prospect Shane Del Rosario will attempt to extend his unblemished streak when he faces fellow heavy hitter Lolohea Mahe in the main event of the "Strikeforce: Challengers" card at Comcast Arena at Everett, live on Showtime at 11 p.m. ET/PT on Friday, July 23. Women's World Welterweight Cham- pion Sarah Kaufman will put her perfect record as well as her crown on the line against international star Roxanne Modafferi.
Following the last official episode of the eleventh season of "The Ultimate Fighter," several match-ups featuring cast members from the show have been announced. In the event headlined by a light heavy- weight bout between Matt Hamill and Keith Jardine, the finale bout featuring Cort McGee and Kris McCray will deter- mine this season's winner.
World Extreme Cagefighting General Manager Reed Harris confirmed today seven remaining bouts for the organization’s loaded card set to take place at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on Sunday, June 20. The fights are Will Campuzano vs. Eddie Wineland, Will Kerr vs. Karen Darabedyan, Frank Gomez vs. Wagnney Fabiano, Bendy Casimir vs. Erik Koch, Diego Nunes vs. Raphael Assuncao, Rafael Rebello vs. Chris Cariaso, and Renan Barao vs. Anthony Leone.
A long-rumored bout between Junior Dos Santos and Roy Nelson is now official. The two heavyweights will square off at "UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen" Aug. 7 at Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif. The UFC has formally announced the fight will be televised on the pay-per-view portion of the card. Dos Santos is undefeated in the UFC, winning all five of his bouts inside the Octagon. Nelson has back-to-back victories since the winning “The Ultimate Fighter: Season 10.”
The second round bouts of M-1 Global’s highly anticipated “M-1 Selection 2010 – Americas” world tournament are set to go down June 26, 2010 at the thrilling Bally’s Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. “It’s clear that these athletes are in a pivotal position in the tournament,” says M-1 Global Director of Operations Evgeni Kogan. “This is a mission to find the next generation of MMA superstars. At this stage it’s win or go home, and the tournament only gets tougher from here on.”
